Happy Holidays!

Here at Prairie Sun, we're still catching our breath after an incredibly busy December, and we hope everyone has been well and safe this holiday season. We're fast approaching the end of the year, and as we look forward to 2007 we thought it was time to catch everyone up on the happenings at Prairie Sun in the latter part of 2006.

The astounding hard-rock and blues guitar-slinger Eric Gales returned to Prairie Sun this fall to record his new album for the Shrapnel Label Group's Blues Bureau Records. Gales recorded his last album "Crystal Vision" at Prairie Sun in the Fall of 2005, and for this new record the same team was assembled: producer (and Shrapnel president) Mike Varney, bassist Steve Evans, drummer Little Thomas, and engineers Mark "Mooka" Rennick and Jason D'Ottavio. The record was mastered by Tim Gennert for Eugene Productions.

As soon as the Eric Gales mix vacated Studio A, guitarist Marc Ford, formerly of the Black Crowes, moved in to mix his new solo record with the same engineering team of Mooka Rennick and Jason D'Ottavio, also for release by Shrapnel Records. Both of these mix sessions made heavy use of two of our newest pieces of gear. One was the RADAR digital multitrack, which in these two cases was used purely as 24-channels of superb D/A conversion for our Pro Tools HD. The other was our API 1604 sidecar, which arrived just in time for the Eric Gales session after much careful restoration work by Dale Epperson of Old School Audio. Look for further details on the sidecar in the near future on PrairieSun.com

Recently we were happy to welcome back to Prairie Sun American music icon Ramblin' Jack Elliot, who recorded a few songs and a whole lot of storytelling in Studio B with producer Roy Rogers and engineer Jason D'Ottavio. Those unfamiliar with Elliot are advised to try his website for more information on Ramblin' Jack and his music. Elliot spent a number of years traveling the country with Woody Guthrie, and many more years on his own, and had a profound influence on artists as diverse as Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.

Also recently visiting Studio B were Santa Cruz-based surf-music makers The Expendables working with producer/engineer Chris DiBeneditto. The Expendables spent a week here this December to lay the foundation for their latest album project, which will be completed later this winter. They recorded their basic tracks in Studio C, with plenty of room mics in the Corn Room to capture the live drums, and then moved to Studio B for overdubs.

Other clients returning to Prairie Sun this winter included the band FreeSound, who brought in their latest album to once again be mixed by engineer Oz Fritz in Studio A, and mastered by Tim Gennert. N2K also returned to Studio A in recent months for further work with engineer Jason D'Ottavio, and KSK System Krush spent a number of days this fall and winter mixing in studios A and B with Oz Fritz. We were also happy this fall to welcome back producer/engineer K. Evan Hodge (K4), who spent a few days in Studio B mixing with Drew Grow (of the band Careen).

Other sessions these last months have included rapper ANT D.O.G. mixing his record with Adam Munoz in Studio A, Wayward Son tracking their project with Jason D'Ottavio in studios A and B, Til Willis mixing in Studio A with engineer Timin Murray, and the Boxcar Saints tracking their record in Studio C with engineer Matt Wright.

Mooka's personal notes:

Well, after attending the AES show in San Francisco this year I couldn't help but go on something of a gear shopping spree and investigate further the cool new products I saw and heard demonstrated. First on the list, thanks to a new endorsement relationship, were a selection of PR-20s, PR-30s, and a PR-40 from Heil Sound's collection of innovative dynamic microphones. Our next venture, which have already proven a huge hit with both staff and visiting engineers, was a pair of Mercury EQ-P1 Pultec recreations. Hats off to Mercury's David Marquette, a long-time Bay Area designer, builder, and restorer, on these wonderful units. Finally, thanks to our new relationship Paul Grove at Summit Audio, we've rounded out the collection of Pultec-style units with Summit's EQP-200B stereo program EQ. These new units of course share our rack with our original vintage Pultec unit.

In the last few months we've begun fruitful endorsement relationships with a number of other audio and instrument companies as well that have us very excited. One was microphone manufacturer Crowley and Tripp, from whom we procured a pair of Naked Eye ribbon microphones that have been absolutely stunning on drums, guitar, and all of Eric Gales' lead vocals. Thanks to a new endorsement relationship with famed pro audio manufacturer Universal Audio, we have acquired their highly respected UAD-1 DSP card and associated plug-ins for the Eugene Productions mastering department. These plug-ins are widely acknowledged as the best recreations of the vintage analog gear by UREI, Teletronics, et. al. that occupies the rackspace in our studios. And of course we have not neglected our guitarist clients - a number of our amps and cabinets now feature boutique speakers thanks to our friends at Tone Tubby, and we now have what may be the ultimate boutique amplifier. Thanks to a new relationship with Two Rock Amplifiers through which Prairie Sun and our clients will serve as beta-testers, we are now proudly in possession of a prototype of the Custom Reverb Signature Version 2, hand-built and customized for Prairie Sun by designer Bill Krinard.

With all this new gear we've been bringing into the studio, and the incredible engineering talent that passes through our studios, I soon realized that we have an amazing educational resource here at Prairie Sun that could be made available to not only our staff, but also to the greater community of producers and engineers out in cyberspace. We're still thinking of ways to get knowledge from point A to point B, but in the meantime we've started the PSR Podcast, with which we plan to provide interviews with visiting engineers, producers, and gear designers as the series continues. It may take us a little while to get wound up, so stay tuned!

Take care everyone, and may you have a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Mark "Mooka" Rennick
