Greetings!

Winter in Sonoma County has finally brought the rains, after a bout of confusing and unseasonably warm January weather. As crazy as the weather has been, though, we've been almost too busy to notice! A whole heap of session work has kept us busy since the last newsletter - read on for the details!

Setting up camp in Studio C in recent weeks was the band Stockholm Syndrome, laying tracks for their new album with veteran engineer John Keane (REM). Formed by bassist Dave Schools of Widespread Panic and guitarist/vocalist Jerry Joseph (the Jackmormons), the band also features Danny Louis (Gov't Mule) on keyboards, Bay Area great Eric McFadden on guitar, and Wally Ingram (Sheryl Crow) on drums. Staff engineer Gene Cornelius assisted.
Returning to Prairie Sun's Studio B once again this winter were locally-based, internationally-renowned roots reggae greats Groundation, laying the foundation for their next studio album. Not ones to mess with a working formula, Groundation once again brought in veteran reggae recordist, mixer, and dub remixer Jim Fox to engineer and Prairie Sun alumnus Gene Cornelius to assist. Everything recorded at Prairie Sun was tracked to 2" tape on the Studer A827, and only at the end transferred to digital.
Occupying Studio C as we neared press time were Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) and his Axis of Merry Evildoers, a new line-up tracking their first record for Biafra's Bay Area-based Alternative Tentacles label. Featuring Biafra on vocals, Ralph Spight (of Victims Family, and a former Prairie Sun intern) on guitar, Billy Gould (Faith No More) on bass, and Jon Weiss (Sharkbait) on drums, the band tracked at high volume with Bay Area regular Matt Kelley at the board.

Matt Kelley also spent time in Prairie Sun's Studio A this winter mixing tracks for Bay Area rapper Unity Lewis, for a project produced by the Organized Elements production team. Matt and the Organized Elements team previously worked together at Prairie Sun mixing the current release for Myka Nyne, and will be back in the near future for further work on Unity's project.
Prairie Sun was happy to welcome this winter San Francisco-based ensemble Rupa & the April Fishes, who tracked their new album with esteemed engineer Oz Fritz in Studio B. The sessions featured a diverse array of musicians from various musical backgrounds who make up the band's eclectic generic soup. Rupa & the April Fishes' last album, "eXtraOrdinary rendition," has hit #1 on iTunes world music chart several times, and with the band just back from touring Europe, we expect similar success for this next record, which will be mixed in Studio A in the coming weeks.

Also working with Oz at Prairie Sun this season was jam/rock/soul band Izabella, who recorded and mixed their new album "Drugs and Apple Pie" while staying on the farm. Tracking the album in Studio C, Izabella were one of the first bands to take advantage of our newly re-commissioned API 1604 console, which now lives as a sidecar next to our custom 80 series Neve. The album was mixed in Studio A, and is due for release this spring.
Locally-based, but well traveled acoustic duo Coyote Grace spent a few weeks at Prairie Sun this winter tracking and mixing their new record "Ear to the Ground" with staff engineer Matt Wright. Made up of singers/songwriters Joe Stevens on guitar and Ingrid Elizabeth on upright bass, the core of Coyote Grace was joined by guitarist Courtney Robbins, multi-instrumentalist Michael Connolly, and drummer Katherine Monnig. The bulk of the tracks were recorded in Studio C, with drums tracked in Studio B, and the mix taking place in Studio A. The resulting album was mastered by Tim Gennert for a mid-April release. In addition, enough additional tracks were recorded and mixed for another EP release down the road, so stay tuned.

Another local group, Jungle Under Kings, recorded and mixed their debut record at Prairie Sun this winter under the guidance of producer Senator O'Brien. Playing rock and roll with a decidedly 1970's old-school flair, the Kings tracked live to 2" tape in Studio B with staff engineer Jason D'Ottavio. Staff engineer Matt Wright mixed the tracks in Studio A. The self-titled album is now available for sale via digital distribution. Matt was also in Studio A this season mixing tracks for new albums from artists Kate Van Horn, David M'ore, and Chris Vinson.
The Abolitionists
Making their yearly pilgrimage, members of the Abolitionists convened at Prairie Sun this winter for further work on their song catalog. Founding member Jim Cohn was in attendance this year, working with fellow founding member and Prairie Sun founder Mark "Mooka" Rennick. Musicians attending this year's session included trumpeter Marcus Cohen, saxophonist Kate Pittard, and vocalist Kate Van Horn, with staff engineer Adam Weiss manning the board. Another first-time Abolitionist this year was engineer Oz Fritz, who mixed the track "Basho Jones" in Studio A.

In January, Mark "Mooka" Rennick and team returned to the Paramount Theater to record the debut performance of Dr. Nolan Gasser's new Cello Concerto by the Oakland Symphony. Once again, Mooka and engineers Matt Wright and Adam Weiss worked with the Oakland Symphony's recordist, Tom Johnson, collaborating on mic placement and gear selection, which included Eugene Productions' DPA 4006-TL microphones, Millennia mic pres, and iZ RADAR 24 digital multitrack. Two performances were recorded, one at the Paramount in Oakland, and another at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's new performance hall. These recordings and those of a pair of rehearsal's were edited together by Matt under the guidance of composer Gasser. The results were mixed by Mooka, Nolan, and Matt, and mastered by Tim Gennert.
  • Also mixed in Studio A by Oz Fritz in recent months was the debut record for Bay Area artist Gaby Velasquez. Made up of Gaby's original tunes in a variety of genres, the album was tracked with an impressive selection of Bay Area musicians.
  • Our friend Volker Strifler came in recently to work on some mixes for Andy Just's new album with staff engineer Timin Murray.
  • LA-based indie/shoegaze band Helen Stellar spent a few days this winter laying tracks in Studio C with engineer Joe Wohlmuth.
  • Serenity Now! returned to Prairie Sun with engineer Colin Gradek to mix their new record in Studio A.
  • Local reggae group Sol Horizon laid tracks in Studio B with Gene Cornelius.
  • Hawaii-based group Guidance stopped in while visiting the Bay Area to track in Studio B with engineer Timin Murray.
  • John and Laura Landgraf visited Studio B this winter, recording piano and vocals with engineer Matt Wright. John was one of the first to make use of the Baldwin's rebuilt action, and gave his staunch approval.
  • Cheap Evil continued their work with engineer Jason D'Ottavio this winter, with more tracking in Studio C and mixing in Studio A.
  • Local bluegrass group The Brothers Comatose tracked and mixed a demo with engineer Matt Wright in Studio C, working 100% live in the Waits Room with no headphones and no overdubs.

Prairie Sun Profile: Gene Cornelius, Freelance Engineer/Producer

What can I say?! Gene came to me when we had a small audio school operating from Prairie Sun. He was driving a truck (3rd shift) for a bread company in Santa Rosa. I have logged so many miles with this can-do mother-******. We rebuilt the Neve in B. We modified, commissioned, and recommissioned rooms. We save our most perplexing audio issues for him because without fail, he gets it done!! Over and over I have heard from the best engineers and producers in the world, "Mean Gene the Recording Machine is the best engineer we have ever had the pleasure of working with from staff anywhere." Now let me tell you about Gene's good side. :) I couldn't have done it without him and I hope to continue working with him well into the future. Thanks Gene.

Gene's extensive credits include work with Tom Waits, Primus, Les Claypool, Norton Buffalo, Stephen Barncard, Marvin Etzioni, and UFO.

Mooka's Notes:

Most of the time, I nearly double the length of the newsletter in this section so I can talk about all the gear I'm excited about. But we've been involved in so many studio upgrades, gear purchases, and maintenance projects that we decided to tell you all about them in separate supplement. If you're already subscribed to the newsletter, you should receive this supplement in your email, but if you aren't, you can find it by clicking here.

I also wanted to take a moment to introduce everyone now yet in the know to our new Studio Manager, Marshall Fassino. You can reach him at the office at (707) 795-7011 or by email at marshall@prairiesun.com If anyone out there in the extended Prairie Sun family has not yet met Marshall, go ahead and give him a call to say hello. His sign's up and he's ready to get to business, and I guarantee you this kid can chat it up with the best of them!

Tough times ahead! We see it and hear it every day. We have been in tough times before and should not be discouraged by the situation at hand. Call me an optimist, but I believe in the power of positive thinking. I see the opportunities, as well as the challenges before us and I don't feel it's anything new. 30 years later, what haven't we seen? What about our industry hasn't changed? Good music - good engineers - good producers - amazing musicians - good friends. As to the challenges: illegal downloading, lack of a farm club style of music development, fewer and fewer venues to play - these are just what is - and part of being in the moment is accepting what is. I believe the solution is applying the same creativity we use in our craft to help transform the "business" side as well.

Remember, whatever side of the business we're dealing with - audio is a delicate negotiation.

Cheers,

Mark "Mooka" Rennick
