Nataly Dawn

Nataly Dawn, of the internet sensation Pomplamoose, came to Prairie Sun in December of 2011 for basic tracking and filming for her upcoming solo album "How I Knew Her." Joining her as the producer for the project was her partner in Pomplamoose, Jack Conte. Upon arrival at Prairie Sun, Nataly had a full camera crew and a stable of extremely talented session players. In addition to Jack, who played drums on a few tracks and wrote string/horn arrangements, the session talent included guitarist Ryan Lerman (Ben Folds 5), David Piltch (Bonnie Raitt,T Bone Burnett) on upright bass, drummer Louis Cole, and legendary session drummer Matt Chamberlain (Pearl Jam, Fiona Apple). The project was tracked by Oz Fritz in Studio C. Eric Kallevig directed the filming with assistant Mark Gamsey. Nataly has been a big proponent of the service "Kickstarter," which played a major role in funding Nataly's project. For more details on how to fund your own project with Kickstarter visit the website. The album is set to be released this summer. To keep up on all things Nataly Dawn be sure to follow her blog.

Early this year Prairie Sun's Studio B was the location for a commercial shoot for internet powerhouse Googlefeaturing local Sonoma County artist and Prairie Sun client Jack Conte. The purpose of the ad is to help encourage people to change there profile picture on the up and coming social media site Google+. This commercial was no small production so naturally we are excited to view Prairie Sun through the eyes of Google. We will be sure to keep everyone posted, when the video is available to the public. We have been told that everyone with a Gmail account will receive the video so keep an eye on your inboxes, Gmail users!

Northern California Bands
Trees

Northern California has always been home to diverse and eclectic music, and in recent months we have seen some of the best. We want to take a moment to highlight two of these bands. AfroMassive is an extremely talented experimental Afro-Cuban funk band. AfroMassive came to Prairie Sun to record basic tracks for their newest studio album. These guys are amazing live and tour regularly, make sure to catch them at a venue near you.

We were also joined this winter by Northern California resident band Dead Winter Carpenters. Since its inception, this band has been touring like mad and has had much success booking popular venues and festivals locally and nationally. Dead Winter came to Prairie Sun to record and mix their newest album with producer/engineer Matt Wright. The new album titled "Ain't it Strange," will be released on May 18th. If you like great local music this is definitely a band to follow.

Justin Bieber & Jaden Smith Release "Happy New Year" Song

A call came in early on December 31, 2011 for an emergency mix session for non other than Justin Bieber. Engineer Josh "Goodie" Gudwin prefers to mix on a SSL so Prairie Sun was a great choice. Josh came in with engineer Isha Erskine to complete a mix for a special New Year's Eve song. The song was a collaboration between Justin Bieber and Jayden Smith titled "Happy New Year." The song was part of a special New Year's promotion including exclusive release on YouTube. To take a listen to the song please visit this link. On a small side note engineer Josh Gudwin and Isha Erskine had worked as interns together years ago in LA, only to come full circle mixing here at Prairie Sun in studio A. Isn't it funny what a small world the recording industry really is.

Shrapnel Records goes Indigenous

     Trees

Shrapnel Records has some great new projects in the hopper! One new artist recently added to the Shrapnel roster is legendary roots-blues-rock band Indigenous. Ranging from blues, soul, and R&B to rock, the sound of the band is a successful synthesis of American music. Joining Mato Nanji on the project was Jeff Martin (George Lynch, Dokken) on drums and in demand bay area session player Steve Evens on bass. The new self-titled album is an honest look into Mato's achievements and influences. With Mike Varney producing, Prairie Sun owner Mark "Mooka" Rennick working on drums and mix, resident engineer Isha Erskine tracking, and chief engineer Matt Wright mixing, the album turned out fantastic. You can purchase a copy here after the May 22nd release.

Steve Puleo

An album simply titled "Smile" was one of the truly great jazz projects to make its way through Prairie Sun since our last installment. Smile is the creation of Bay Area veteran vocalist, drummer, producer Steve Puleo. For the past 30 years Steve has been heavily involved in the Gospel music scene, but has recently returned to his jazz roots for his most recent project. There was no shortage of talented musicians to play
on Smile. The line up consisted of Emmy award winning producer and pianist Jerome Gilmer, drummer James Levi who toured and recorded with Herbie Hancock for many years, long time Bay Area bass guru, Terry Miller and to round out the core of the group was bay area jazz legend Randy Vincent who is credited to have played with Dizzy Gilespe. Rob Roth was in for sax overdubs as well as Fletch Wiley who played flugal horn on a couple tunes. Steve Puleo's vocal style could be compared to Tony Bennett or Frank Sinatra. The CD release party for "Smile" will be held May 5th for more information on the event please read more.

Studio Manager - Andrew Mastroni

Looking back to August, I marvel at how time moves. Our summer special was a huge success. We met many new friends and feel privileged to have worked with them. Our studio manager, Andrew Mastroni made it all happen. Andrew came on board 4 plus years ago, already an accomplished guitarist and a graduate of our internship program. Besides having tremendous technical chops it is his people skills I want to highlight. Andrew is a calm, and compassionate influence on the culture of Prairie Sun. Running the daily operations of the studio's is no easy task. His passion for the "feel" of any situation is inspiring. His firm but gentle hand with our interns contributes to our success. It is time to show a little love here and acknowledge my respect for him. Thank you Andrew. Be safe this spring.

Sincerely,

Mark  "Mooka"  Rennick
